You get the light sailor function when you start working as a starter on a ship in inland navigation. The function of light sailor is the same as that of deckhand. The difference between a deckhand and a light sailor is that as a light sailor you follow an official training. You may therefore start at 15 years old. This has been done to stimulate you to follow an official training.
Because you are just starting out, you are not expected to carry out the work with responsibility and independence. You will start with the basic activities and you will be actively supervised and put to work by the skipper.
Work processes
- Mooring and mooring the ship (securing and loosening ropes)
- Supporting the skipper during loading and unloading
- Maintain the ship (sanding, biking and painting)
